Piriton Tablets are an effective treatment for allergic symptoms caused by hay fever and other allergies. The active ingredient, chlorphenamine maleate, is an antihistamine that helps relieve symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, tenderness, and irritation.

Piriton Tablets can be used to treat conditions such as:

  • Hay fever and other allergies, including pet allergies, house dust mite allergies, and mould spore allergies.
  • Nettle rash and hives.
  • Skin allergies and dermatitis.
  • Prickly heat and heat rash.
  • Reactions to food, food additives, or medicines.
  • Insect bites and stings.
  • The itchy rash associated with chickenpox.

Who Should Not Take Piriton Tablets?

Do not take Piriton Tablets if:

  • You have ever had an allergic reaction to antihistamines or any of the ingredients in the tablets.
  • You have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) for depression in the last two weeks.
  • You are taking other medicines containing antihistamines, including cough and cold relief products.

Precautions Before Taking Piriton Tablets

Before using Piriton Tablets, consult your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure.
  • Heart disease.
  • Epilepsy.
  • Glaucoma.
  • Enlarged prostate.
  • Liver or kidney disease.
  • Bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, or other chronic lung conditions.

Additional precautions:

  • Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medication.
  • If the tablets make you feel drowsy, dizzy, or cause blurred vision, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • If you have an intolerance to certain sugars, speak to your doctor before taking Piriton Tablets.

Interactions With Other Medicines

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Piriton Tablets if you are taking any prescription medications, particularly:

  • Phenytoin (for epilepsy).
  • Medicines for anxiety or to aid sleep.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking Piriton Tablets to ensure they are safe for you and your baby.

How to Take Piriton Tablets

The dosage of Piriton Tablets varies based on age:

  • Adults and children aged 12 years and over: Take one tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed six tablets in 24 hours.
  • Children aged 6 to 12 years: Give half a tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not exceed six half-tablets in 24 hours.
  • Elderly: Consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking Piriton Tablets, as you may be more prone to side effects, including confusion. The maximum daily dose for elderly patients is three tablets (12 mg) in 24 hours.

Important usage information:

  • Do not take more than the recommended dose.
  • Allow a minimum of 4 hours between doses.
  • Do not use continuously for more than 14 days without consulting a doctor.
  • Do not give Piriton Tablets to children under 6 years old.

What to Do If You Take Too Many Tablets

If you take more than the recommended dose, seek medical advice immediately. Do not drive if you have taken too many tablets.

What to Do If You Forget a Dose

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects of Piriton Tablets

Like all medications, Piriton Tablets may cause side effects, though not everyone will experience them.

Stop using Piriton Tablets and seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face or mouth, difficulty breathing, or a severe itchy rash (hives).

Common Side Effects

  • Drowsiness and sedation.
  • Dizziness, headache, blurred vision, or difficulty concentrating.

Other Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, indigestion, or stomach discomfort.
  • Fatigue or weakness.
  • Sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Irritability, nightmares, confusion, or excitability (more common in children and elderly individuals).

How to Store Piriton Tablets

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack.
  • Store below 30°C.

Additional Information

Each Piriton Tablet contains 4 mg of chlorphenamine maleate as the active ingredient. Other ingredients include lactose, maize starch, yellow iron oxide (E 172), magnesium stearate, and water.
