Piriton Tablets 4mg are an effective antihistamine medication designed to relieve allergy symptoms and itchy skin conditions. The active ingredient, chlorphenamine maleate, helps to reduce allergic reactions by blocking histamine, a substance produced by the body during an allergic response.
What Are Piriton Tablets 4mg Used For?
Piriton Tablets 4mg are used to relieve symptoms of allergies, including:
- Hay fever and seasonal allergies
- Pet allergies
- House dust mite and mould spore allergies
- Nettle rash (urticaria) and hives
- Skin allergies and dermatitis
- Prickly heat and heat rash
- Reactions to food, food additives, or medicines
- Insect bites and stings
- The itchy rash associated with chickenpox
How to Take Piriton Tablets 4mg
Adults and Children Over 12 Years:
- Take one tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
- Do not take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours.
Children Aged 6 to 12 Years:
- Give half a tablet every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
- Do not give more than 6 half-tablets in 24 hours.
Elderly:
- Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking Piriton Tablets 4mg, as elderly individuals may be more prone to side effects, including confusion.
- A lower daily dose may be required, with a maximum daily limit of 3 tablets (12 mg) in 24 hours.
Important Usage Instructions:
- Do not take more than the recommended dose.
- The minimum interval between doses should be 4 hours.
- Do not use continuously for more than 14 days without consulting a doctor.
- Not suitable for children under 6 years.
Warnings and Precautions
Do Not Take Piriton Tablets 4mg If:
- You have ever had an allergic reaction to antihistamines or any of the ingredients in the tablets.
- You have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) for depression in the last two weeks.
- You are taking other medications containing antihistamines, including cold and cough remedies.
Special Precautions:
- Consult your doctor before taking Piriton Tablets 4mg if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, epilepsy, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, liver or kidney disease, bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, or chronic lung disorders.
- Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
- Do not drive or operate machinery if the tablets cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision.
- If you have been advised by your doctor that you have an intolerance to certain sugars, seek medical advice before taking this medicine.
Taking Piriton Tablets 4mg With Other Medicines
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using Piriton Tablets 4mg if you are taking any other medications, particularly:
- Phenytoin (used for epilepsy)
- Medicines for anxiety or sleep disorders
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Piriton Tablets 4mg.
Possible Side Effects

- Difficulty urinating
- Chest tightness
- Ringing in the ears
- Changes in heart rhythm
- Low blood count or bruising
- Liver problems, including jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
What to Do If You Take Too Many Tablets
- Contact a doctor or visit the nearest hospital immediately.
- Do not drive if you have taken an overdose.
What to Do If You Forget to Take a Dose
- Take one as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose.
- Do not take two doses at the same time.
How to Store Piriton Tablets 4mg
- Keep out of sight and reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
- Store below 30°C.
